Snippets from commissioning: Plant's first breath of Hydrocarbon

Starting your own process plant is a dream come true. So many people work countless number of hours to plan, procure, construct, understand process, ensure safety and  take care of every minute detail. Its like creating a new world which for many years in future will breathe, thrive and give employment to generations of people. Five years later after the first kick off meeting with our technology licensors finally the day came when we were ready to take Ethylene in pipelines inside our plant's boundary area or battery limit (ISBL). All we had to do was reverse one of the spectacle blinds and open isolation valves at upstream of spectacle blind. But, Mr Murphy's laws killed the fun. As we were opening bolts of blind's flange, we heard our gas meters screami ng. Both the valves at upstream of this spectacle blind were passing. We made a plan, Let's connect few hoses and vent the pressure to flare. When pressure comes down we will open the flange bolts and revers...

Crude to Us...

Millions of years ago many marine lives died beneath the weight of sediments eroded from the land. Everybody thought their story was over, but it had just begun... With sediments they made source rock which gave value to our lives. The value that enabled us to rise in Maslow's level of hierarchy and think about big ideas like democracy, capitalism, socialism, Medicine, Spiritualism and raise our eyes to space.

The History....

In around 1880 a guy named George E. Davis coined the termed "Chemical Engineering" though the first reference of using mechanical equipment for manufacture of chemicals is given to James F. Donnelly in around 1839. Chemical Engineering based on the building blocks of Unit Operations was taught at MIT; Owen's College, Manchester; University College; London...but failed to impress the employers. It was tough to tell and explain to employers that its graduates were not chemists, and were engineers. But later with works of IChemE, AIChE  the branch gradually picked up. By 1940 it became an essential field diversifying into various other concepts such as Transport Phenomenon.World War 2 saw the growth of Petroleum Sector while after that pharmaceutical Industry with Antibiotics gained importance, In 1950 it was the growth of Polymers and then Plastic took control. Then came the series of disasters like Chernobyl Disaster, Bhopal Gas Tragedy; These increased the safety...

What all is this Chemical Engineering?

That cream on your face, that pen in your hand, that paper you are writing on, that color on your walls, with cement in them, that coffee on your table, that milk in it,those cookies with it, that sugar in them, The clothes you are wearing, the scent you are using, the Air conditioner in your room, the fuel in your vehicle, the tires it has, the aluminium and plastic body it has, the computer you have. That beverage you have in night or during day time to refresh yourself, the medicine you have to overcome that hangover you had, the cleaner you use to clean your floor. The fertilizers you would have heard of, used by farmers to grow crops and trees providing us fruits and food. All the preservatives, All the chemicals, and useful product in your head, before your eyes that you can think of, that you can see and the plants from where it comes from, machines and processes it undergoes are all Chemical Engineering......

Wonderful World

Its a wonderful world.....We are surrounded by innumerable things which make our life an enjoyable process. Chemical Engineering is all about manufacturing these things in the most sustainable and economical way possible. The beauty of this branch of Engineering lies in the fact, that in order to produce a single useful product, hell lot of people work in an interconnected network like a team, like a family.... On this blog we are going to pour ourselves into this wonderful world of Chemical Engineering, A world making our world..... - Amit Saini
